One of the members here once stated (I think) that the 1 cent coins were filed down to fit in the 10 cent slot of vending machines.

Yes, I've pointed that out. I have a cent that's been "professionally" punched down to the size of a dime, a very clean job, probably by machine for mass fake dime making.
