Neat thread. It was fun reading Mikes comment then your response about melting it down, ha!

Looking forward to reading about this. Maybe its not damage but instead broken etcher marks?

Well now, that is a neat thought. Laser etcher run a-muck on my dime?

I don't know what caused the scratches. But the scratches are in the coin, not the die, so it wouldn't have anything to do with the laser etching process.

So as of now, it missed the Laser process?

The laser frosting is very feeble, low-density, patchy, and absent in some areas. So while it wasn't missed entirely, it was done very poorly. Since it's computer-controlled, a glitch in the software or the translation of that software is probably responsible. There are other surprises that I will disclose in my article.

Mr. Diamond has written two articles on two of my finds. I completely understand that type of excitement. He most assuredly is the foremost die expert on American coinage. Massive congrats on your find!

Thanks - This is certainly a new experience to me, especially since I was not even looking for an error on this coin..

Update:
Got an e'mail from mike yesterday.
He told me that his article is finished and will be published on the on=line version of ' Coin World' next Saturday. I'll post up the article (if it is too long or comes with images - I'll post the link) when I get it.

I can't wait until to read what he says about it - and the mystery he inferred to in an earlier post..

Isn't it crazy what this forum can accomplish (:
Congrats, and good thing you never melted that sucker !
Had the privilege of sending a coin to mike before, unfortunately not as good of news for me. That's ok tho (: the hunt continues (though I have been in a slump with searching)
