I don't see any evidence of damage so seems like a little grease in the die during striking is the most likely explanation.

Interesting! If it was hit and the metal moved, it was hit long enough ago for the typical circulation wear to hide the damage. Agree, a circulation hit may have flattened the tail of the G long ago.
