I have seen nickels turn to a goldish color (even have a few) it is just the toning they take on. I think it is because of the copper in the nickel mix that help it tone that way on the surface. it is a form of surface oxidation that can be rubbed off in circulation. It also at one time been just plated with a gold color.
The 59 is an interesting coin, as stated could be a Black Beauty, It is black all over with no sign of any shiny metal showing through - that, if so is a great find.
