Hey all; found this 1972 penny that just doesn't look right. The rim is really thick and looks to me to be a little off center.
Can someone tell me what is going on with this coin?

Neat! I recall learning something about "caps" but not sure.

The coin weighs 3.17g. I didn't think much of it so I didn't even weigh it.

A very slightly misaligned die with a Rim Fin. Neither is worth any numismatic premium unless much more dramatic than this, but still worth reading about what causes them so you can better understand the minting process and how these differ from more valuable errors.

I don't have any way to measurre the thickness. We just recently moved and all my "mics are at the other place.

I just came back to look again and noticed the date looks really fat and maybe spread out? All the 1972 cents I have are super skinny on top with a 2-dimensional duplicate underneath the top part, known as Machine Doubling. But were you aware that some of the varieties use the term "Extra thickness.." to describe certain classes of Doubled Dies?

Often the fins are very thin. This looks like a medium sized fin. There are larger fins. The larger the fins are the better the fin maintains it's structure.
Stronger fin:
