Hopefully, there's an easy rule to follow for this year. I have read everything I can and I understand the difference between LG & SM. I'm running into issues when I find a coin that has a high 7 but the 0 is doubled or extended to the North slightly. Is this always a LD? Is the date fundamentally different like 1960 SM/LG. Maybe I'm getting caught up in the weeds on this one. Again, I get the difference. Is there a basic rule of thumb that always applies? Thank You

*I just noticed the small date is shorter on the tail of the 9 and 7. Possibly all digits. Also seems a bit wider than LD. Is this accurate?

The shape of the 9 and where the looped end points is one way.
On the left is a large date on the right is a small date.

Dearborn, you might want to edit your post it's backwards. On a SD the loop on the nine points to the 7. on a LD it points to the S. Infact Dearborn I think both of yours are LD.

huh, I got that directly from a reference page. I may have to go back and check on the accuracy of that site. Thanks.

I got my info from: https://qualitycollectiblecoins.com...e-varieties/
(I myself, know the difference, and was just looking for examples of the differences - next time, I'll just take pictures of my coins)

The lines are hiding what you need to see:

Note the differences on the curl of the '9' on the small dates? Look for this shape on that area in order to be a Small date 1970-S. The lines are hiding the real story.
