The more common of the two is the denier by Francois I:
https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces39082.htmlIt is of very low grade billon, with a small amount of silver mixed with copper. Having a silvery appearance when new, this kind of coins soon turned brown-black when handled and so were called
monnaies noires, "black money."
For provenance - well, it was for Francois I that Jacques Cartier claimed Canada in the 1500s. The French settlers that followed did perhaps bring some deniers with them (even if they arrived long after, they could still have old coins that had circulated for many decades or more than a century even - not uncommon in those days).
Or, it could of course have been acquired from abroad by a Canadian collector at a later time.
In any event, a nice little piece of history.
