Holy schnikes John77! I didn't realize your average out there was only around 17 per box. That also makes me feel a little better about what I may find over this next 100,000 nickels.
I agree with the nic a date. I need to not be so impatient and do the vinegar method. I have a few buffalos that I may test out today on.

Thanks for the info John 77. Makes me even more thankful for the 385 I found in the last box.

I picked up my boxes yesterday and 4 of the 5 boxes appears to look very promising with lots of older nickels on the ends. I went though the least appealing looking box this morning and still pulled 26 from 1938-1959, including 3 1939-P, a 1943-P silver nickel, and a dateless buffalo. I am going to place the buffalo in vinegar while I am at work today to see how it does vs nic a date as recommended by John77

Great finds, thanks for the research and statistics! Makes it all the more fun to have goals when searching to see if you have an abundant box or not so great....

I have to say, I think the original dateless buffalo is a nicer coin. The toning and circulation dirt brought depth to many of the smoothly worn details. It also has better color than the cleaned coin.

Brandmeister I 100% agree on your statement. Unfortunately I couldn't see the date. I do need this one for my folder though.

You cannot fill a hole if you do not know what hole it fills.

I tried the vinegar for 24 hours but made very little progress on that coin. I covered the entire coin in nic o date to avoid the ugly spot that's left when only a drop is applied to the date.
While not ideal I think the coin looks better as it is now than if it was only the date that was cleaned.
I do wish the dates didn't wear off of these coins so easily because they are some of my favorite of all of the US minted coinage.

It's been awhile since I found one of these. Roughly 63,000 nickels since the last one.
