Brandmeister - No, the bank does not charge me for boxes nor do I believe that they charge our customers for boxes. I obtain these boxes directly from my employer and have them order me 5 boxes for their Brink's order when they order/sell cash every week. There is a charge for non rolled coin, which is 9%. I can use this service for free as an employee, however it is an hour drive away for me. I opened an account with another financial institution that is a few minutes from my house that provides a coin counting machine free of charge for customers who maintain a minimum balance.
nick10 - Exercise is important! Roughly 10 years ago I was in the bodybuilding scene and was featured in a few magazines. Thankfully I have returned to that sport after a 10 year break from a back injury that required 6 months off. Unfortunately I found the finer things of city living to be more of an attraction then picking back up in the gym. I am currently in week 11 of my body transformation. I have an 18 month old and the kid can't grow up with a fat dad and here the stories of the "good ol' days". You'll see the transformation throughout the coming months in my YouTube posts in the timelapse scenes. I won't look as fat :) I should have 6 pack abs back by this time next year.
Coinfrog - when I dive into a hobby I dive in headfirst. Fishing is my true passion, particularly muskies. If anyone here reading this thread muskie fishes then you understand my mentality. It's not much far off from the guys that bowhunt for deer. Once the first set is complete, depending on the number of coins that I have went through and how many I have to find for the second book, I'll reevaluate if I want to keep going.Going through this volume of nickels is not too difficult. Getting an efficient system down is half the battle.
The 1966 is literally perfect, except for a slight scratch on Jefferson's cheek.
There is no mint mark anywhere on it. The coin really stood out. It does not appear to be a proof, as I have a few to compare. But the finish is bizarre on it. It's almost mirror like.
Brandmeister the fields of that 1966 look just like a proof coin. The device doesn't have the frosty look, but it is different than the rest of the coin. A different finish, but not that of a proof. It's an oddball for sure.
Quote: I remain astonished, truly at a loss for words, at this sort of endeavour, which is guaranteed to consume mountains of time with no conceivable finanial or academic brenefit.
Momma always said... anything that keeps me off the street and out of jail.

Quote: SMS coins were not proof strikes and had a different finish, and IMO you might well have lucked into a 1966 SMS nickel.

Exactly... I wish I had the convenience of a coin counting machine - we have zero free ones in my local area - even the local Credit Unions don't have them... So I have three different buy/drop routes I take one Saturday a month. Works like a charm for me.

For the love of God, would you PLEASE stop beating this dead horse? Let the guy ENJOY his passion!
CRH Nickeloholic. 1,600,000 nickels searched in eight years! Have found FOUR complete Jefferson sets!
nickelguy88, like you I used to spend a lot.A LOT.of my time fishing. I'm a native trout freak and pinched pennies (lord what a bad pun) so I could travel and flyfish my butt off all over the US. Somewhere along the way we ended up with 4 kids so I got into building custom glass fly rods, fishing less and less, and now I fish a little in the marshes of SC's lowcountry, spending more downtime farting around with coins.
Point is, if you're ever around SC or eastern PA and feel like fishing, hit me up.
pound_foolish if I'm ever out that way I'll let you know for sure. I live along Lake Erie and have hooked into a couple of large steelhead while chasing after pike in the late fall and early spring. Biggest one I landed was 35 inches. Caught it on an size 14 husky jerk. One heck of a battle.
My next batch of 10,000 nickels arrived today and I just got them in the house. I'm going to get started on them tonight.
I suspect Coinfrog's point is that there's much to experience in life, so don't let coins, or any hobby, take it over. Be sure you are also doing good things for people and the planet. Someone instead spending all his free time searching coins evokes images of Ebenezer Scrooge. Sounds like nickelguy88, with family and other activities, is not a Scrooge.
First box is off to a great start. New personal record with 37 nickels found from the 1938-1959 series, and two dateless buffalos in back to back rolls! I found a couple of S mint marks from the 50's, and no silver. Hopefully these last 4 boxes keep producing! So far the hunt is off to a fun start!
