Looks like a Die Crack/Die Chip. The doubling you're seeing is Die Deterioration Doubling.

I know you are right . In my mind DDD makes the details begin to wash out, where am I going wrong here? Some DDD is obvious, letters become blurry and bust fades out?

There is no Cud there.
Cuds occur on the rim when a piece of the die has broken away.
Click on the highlighted text to see what a Cud is.
"Dipping" is not considered cleaning...
