I found a 1958 Wheat penny today outside on the ground. it was a little caked with dirt but I used some mild soap to rinse it off. it was heads as well! I don't know much about coins and I'm new to this hobby. was I wrong to clean the gunk off?

To CCF! Nice find on the Wheat cent. Next time, use 100% pure Acetone and maybe Verdi-Care with it, instead of soap.

shortkaik37,

Nice find. Finding it heads up means good luck
Never clean coins until you post a photo here on CCF and ask us. Also, practice cleaning coins on coins you know are only worth face value. You don't want to damage a valuable by cleaning it.

Nice find! Worth only about 3 cents though. Rinse it off under the tap a little if it's dirty.

very nice 'lucky' find. I would soak it in acetone for a day to get any soap residue off it then let air dry - no patting or rubbing it dry.
