Hey guys, I have been working my way through the collection that I inherited from my grandfather. I sorted all of the coins by denomination and then by year for the pennies. I started with the earliest working my way up to the newest. As was was looking closely at them I found this coin. I'm not sure if it is a1920 or 1926, and there is a faint impression of what should be a mint mark. I noticed it was very flat and seems to have another image stamped over the top of the coin. I can't tell what it is so I thought I would post it here so that some you experts might shed some light on the matter. At first look it appears to be just extreme die wear along with wear from circulation, but I don't think that is what it is at all. ![Very-Strange-[1926]-Lincoln-Cent](uploaded/rodgerdodger2023/20240102_1920_6_d_01.jpg) ![Very-Strange-[1926]-Lincoln-Cent](uploaded/rodgerdodger2023/20240102_1920_6_d_03.jpg) ![Very-Strange-[1926]-Lincoln-Cent](uploaded/rodgerdodger2023/20240102_1920_6_d_05.jpg) ![Very-Strange-[1926]-Lincoln-Cent](uploaded/rodgerdodger2023/20240102_1920_6_d_02.jpg) ![Very-Strange-[1926]-Lincoln-Cent](uploaded/rodgerdodger2023/20240102_1920_6_d_04.jpg)

Looks like a 26-D and I see ghosting on the reverse. John1

I believe the year is a 1926. The 0 in a 1920 LWC would not be that high. The mint mark is more D than S as well.

Highly worn and abused along with a late die state.
1926-D

Maybe a very worn die, but it doesn't explain the strange depression on the reverse of the coin in the shape of a bust? Maybe a grease glob on the die? Definitely not a Dryer Coin as I have one of those (Nickle) The outer diameter is identical to my 1914... Still confused... ![Very-Strange-[1926]-Lincoln-Cent](uploaded/rodgerdodger2023/20240102_1920_6_d_05a.jpg) ![Very-Strange-[1926]-Lincoln-Cent](uploaded/rodgerdodger2023/20240102_img_0237a.jpg)

Thank you Dearborn... That makes total sense. I've never seen it before thus my confusion about it. I guess that die should have been scrapped a few million coins before this one was struck...

Also, given the age, I'm willing to be it's been through MANY wash/dry cycles over it's life. It looks a lot like a laundry mat coin that got stuck in a machine for years.

A worn 26-D that had soft strike issues to start with.

Looks like this unfortunate coin spent a decade or two submerged in a fountain, probably one with chlorinated water.
We have a fountain with chlorinated water at my workplace, and today's zinc cents look awful after just a few days in there.
