mrwiskers Pillar of the Community United States 1780 Posts	Posted 03/10/2025 3:20 pm Identifying Spanish cob 1/2 reals ...thought I'd post a trio of Mexico City 1/2 real cobs, which, from Philip II - on, showed a stylized monogram of the king's name ( in the Latin spelling: PHILIPPVS) ..."V" being the Latin equivalent of our "U" ... ...Monograms were designed by cramming letters together, with "I" sometimes contained within the 1st bar of "H", "L" being contained within the 1st bar of "H", or even represented backwards, combined with the letter "I" ... although containing 3 P's, the "P" was only used once, for all three ... ...confused already?...Since cobs rarely show all of the dies features, identifying them as to monarch & date can be very challenging, & any detail shown is a clue ... ...so with that in mind, here's an example of 3 succeeding Spanish monarchs, Philips II, III, & IV (sometimes displayed as IIII) ... with my "artistic" rendition of the complete monogram. I used Microsoft 'PAINT' + an old 1990's photo program to try & capture the monogram styles as close as possible ... note that any monogram style, for any given monarch / assayer, may have slight variances ... said nuances are a challenge & can drive you nuts (that's my excuse, anyway) ...
