Quote: Navarre-Bearn 1 Franc 1582: I meant to comment earlier on that interesting coat of arms with a very busy left side and nearly empty right!. 1580 Lithuanian 3 groschen. The coins I've been posting with Stefan Bathory's portrait are a bit tyricky to assign to a country. At this time (1580s) the kingdom of Poland and the grand duchy of Lithuania were joined together as the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. Livonia was also a fief of the PLC. The legends on the coin's reverse identify them to use in one of the three places (Poland, Lithuania or Livonia).

Quote: In the past (like before 1900) collectors used to write their inventory numbers on the coin just like that. Almost looks like it's not on the coin. but that makes sense.

Original reverse: A mouse tries to free the lion from the collar of inquisition; ROSIS · LEONEM · LORIS · MVS · LIBERAT (The mouse frees the lion from ties by gnawing) 1580
