Nice one, @bd251. I'm playing my Bahmani tanka AH821 1418 CE, despite some uncertainty about the date. To my mind, there is too much free space to the top right of the "1" for it to be a 2 or a 3 (and it seems to have passed muster on Zeno)

Those tankas are great. I love the characters above the date that look like teeth. I'd wondered about the AH821 coin a few days back, and whether the second character in the date could even have been a 3, so 83(last digit off flan). But that comment is from an observer who doesn't even know the date range for the type.

If there is any doubt about a date, it is always questioned at the very least, and more often than not, downright overruled. Regardless, it's discussions like this that keep the debate healthy. Quote: Those tankas are great. I love the characters above the date that look like teeth. The artwork of these tanks is quite elegant IMO. THE "teeth" is the stylised Arabic character representation of the S in sultan, reading right to left. The same word is on the other face, top row, in its more formal style

AH 818 (1415 CE) Mamluk half dirham The date is written in words on the left hand image. Also refer to Zeno #73702 Mamluk AR 1/2 dirham, Shaykh, Dimashq, 818AH. The text, date and mint are read completely. The text of the left image: Shaykh / Abu-l Nasr / al-Malik al-Mu'ayyad The following line, as always, with the very large reductions. sanat theman 'ashr wa theman miat. (818) Very good safety. The description can be looked here. Balog. The coinage of the Mamluk sultans of Egypt and Syria. Numismatic Studies No12. New York 1964. Supplement A Hoard of silver coins struck sy al-Mu'ayyad Shaykh, N/4, N/5.
