I tried a little experiment recently with three dateless Buffalo nickels I had. I found out about it on Youtube. So a seller on ebay likes to throw in bonus Buffalo nickels. Unfortunately, they are generally dateless. I guess can't expect much for free! I added some vinegar to a glass cup and let the three nickels sit in there. The user on youtube only had to wait like 3-4 days. I've waited 3-4 weeks. I did notice several of the dates appear recently on two of the coins. Both 1920 Philadelphia from what I can tell. Just an interesting observation. I wouldn't normally do this, but given I wasn't really losing anything at got them for free, I figured why not.   |

Experimentation can be useful, yes....as long as the risk is minimal.

There are 13 specific dates and mints that can be identified without the dates, since the mint marks are generally visible. These are one-year design varieties for the indicated mints. Details of the varieties can be found on Variety Vista.  1913 P-D-S Type 1 (RDV-001) 1921 P and S (ODV-004) 1923 P and S (ODV-005) 1925 P-D-S (ODV-006) 1931-S (ODV-008) 1935 P and S (ODV-009) (these are the only P and S coins with this obverse, but both 1935-D and 1938-D share the obverse) Edited by fortcollins

Honestly, this beats the old acid treatment, which leaves an unappealing stain.

A vinegar soak for dateless Buffalo's has been around a lot longer than YouTube.

I use white vinegar and salt, mixed thoroughly. Always get a date by morning.

There are subtle differences between the 1920 and 1924 (ODV-003) on the left curved ribbon to tell them apart on a dateless coin.
