A new pickup that was unidentified at the time.

It's a penny, minted by "Ilger on Lvnd" (Ilger working at London) in the reign of John (of Robin Hood fame) 1207-1210 and type class 5c

In the time of King John, Ilger was the Middle English version of an continental Germanic personal name introduced by the Normans. It was composed of two elements:

Hild (meaning strife or battle)

Ger (meaning spear)

This was all happening a couple of centuries before surnames became a thing. Today the actual name Ilger still survives as an rare surname, in East Anglia and Cambridgeshire


EDIT - there's also nowhere on Numista to log this coin - I'll have to see about getting it added
