Louis XIII was King of France from 1610 until his death in 1643.
He inherited the throne at the age of nine following the assassination of his father, Henry IV.
Due to his young age, his mother, Marie de' Medici, assumed the role of regent and effectively governed the kingdom during the first years of his reign.
One of the most significant developments in the monetary history of Louis XIII's reign occurred in 1640, with the introduction of the gold Louis d'or.
The new coin soon became one of the most renowned gold denominations in European numismatic history and lent its name to a long series of French gold coins issued under subsequent monarchs.
