coppercoins Pillar of the Community United States 7629 Posts	Posted 10/24/2009 10:40 am And the reason it generally only happened to the mintmark area is that they were punched into the die by hand, and if not perfectly flush, there could be edges that when a coin is punched are too straight up and down. This causes the die to stick on the edge that's too straight uo and down, thus tearing the copper plating and exposing the zinc, which corrodes and eventually rots with exposure to air and moisture.
