Looks like a die chip on the 8 and a smaller one on the 9.I'm just guessing. Is this the year they switched over to zinc?

I agree with Jasper. Just a die chip. The area under the chip could be just die wear in that area. Note the die flow lines on the date. The die flow lines cross over the die chip with the direction on the area SE of the chip. If it had been an errant mint mark, more of these would have been found and the shape is not the same as a mint mark. Just a die chip.

jasper62 - I have to say "Good form" on your response. For a copper 1983 is definatly good for me! ! so obvious that the point of interest kinda transparantly covered the obvious.thanks ! ! Oh yeah, it weighs 3.1 grams . . . . .

A 1983 zincoln should weight 2.5 grams. A copper cent weighs 3.11.

So that would be one hundredth of a gram more than my digital scale says it weighs?

3.1g is definitely in the range. Using a good scale here, bronze cents usually weigh in between 3.06-3.17gr

If this really does weigh 3.1 grams, then you would appear have a transitional error -- a copper-alloy cent from a period when copper-plated zinc cents were the only ones supposed to be produced. It would be worth a few thousand dollars.
Error coin writer and researcher.

I think the scale might be off. The bumps indicate to me , at least, the kind of corrosion that I would expect to see on a copper-plated zinc cent.

Can you post pictures of the entire obverse and reverse for us to see?

Thanks,
Bill
