Funny, the mm is the only place on the coin with a plating failure. I hate it when that happens because someone will probably find the "D" and add it to their 1914 P.

Geez that is like almost surgical precision. But I have a hard time understanding how they can pull it out so neatly.

Most likely the mintmark was lifted up by subsurface corrosion and then the whole thing fell off.
Error coin writer and researcher.

And the reason it generally only happened to the mintmark area is that they were punched into the die by hand, and if not perfectly flush, there could be edges that when a coin is punched are too straight up and down. This causes the die to stick on the edge that's too straight uo and down, thus tearing the copper plating and exposing the zinc, which corrodes and eventually rots with exposure to air and moisture.

there's a questionable 1914-D posted on the modern coins forum. I told them that's where my missing mm went. LOL.
