Tokens with this overall appearance and center hole are typically amusement tokens. It is common for the name of the business (or sometimes the number of the amusement device -- pinball is common) to be on the token. Also, newspaper/magazine/tobacco stores (rare now) frequently had pinball machines. Likely all of our minds immediately went to the same interpretation of S.O.L but I would suspect we are looking at the initials of the news store owner.
