Beautiful! I wish the TPGs had to put onto the slab what specifically makes a 69 not be a 70. It would be a great teaching tool and also might mean their consistency/accuracy would be bettered.

The differences between the 69's and 70's is so miniscule that magnification is required to see the difference, if there really is one to begin with. The motivation behind registry set competition is the only thing that drives this, IMO. Without such competition I don't think PR70 Ikes would have achieved their current prices. For me, the money it takes to acquire one will never be justified. The only reason I bought this particular upgrade was because I got it for only $39 (BIN, believe it or not) with free shipping. That's the same price I paid for my PR68DCAM. The cameo is extra frosty to boot, so it was a no-brainer for me. There are a couple of these Minor Varieties on the bay right now with the same grade or lower, and they are listed for moon money BIN prices. If I need magnification to see the difference, then I certainly do not need to pay the crazy premium for that difference. |

Geeez, gymcoachdon. Those are some really nice photos of some really nice Ikes! I'm thinking your 1976-P has a struk-thru grease error on the reverse in DOLLAR. I know the bicentennial Ikes have much weaker strikes than the years before and after it, but this seems to be more than that. It is really concentrated on the bottom portion of the second L.  I always like to imagine seeing an Ike dollar just a second after it was struck. That would have been the closest anyone ever had to seeing a potential MS70 Ike. I wonder how many MS70 Ikes existed at one time for mere seconds. Tantalizing.... Edited by Darth Morgan

Yes, I noticed that when I took the picture. I also noted what appeared to be a hit on the tail of the R in dollar, but on closer examination, it is raised, so possibly a die scratch. Made me wonder if it was an over polished die.

Its also why I let a minor variations of DDOs and RPMS go when I was roll hunting JFKs. If it takes a microscope to see the difference, then its just not fun (to me) to collect. I have a 1978-d like that.. Someone said it could be electro polishing. Mine shows cartwheel but looks like a mirror in direct sunlight

I'm going to post three Ikes -- jbuck might approve ;) First, I about died when my cashier asked me if I would trade her a dollar bill for one of the "big dollar coins", and was surprised to receive a circulated Proof Ike for my $1 note... 1974-S Proof...   Second, I picked up another shiny round Ike to join the other Ikes in the cabinet:  Third, I picked up a "PCGS" Ike as well...   Enjoy!! Some slight toning but that's it. I almost want to give it a super quick dip in ezest but I'm too afraid to. I dip ikes if they need it, it works wonders but the mirrors are so strong. And it's not like a proof. You can't tell at a glance. But put some newsprint near it and forget about needing your glasses! I've only seen one business strike ike slabbed as proof like and that was NGC. It's the only PL ike that comes up in Google searches. So whenever I sub to NGC next he'll tag along |
