I am working on a Dansco album with Franklin half dollars and I have noticed that there 5 extra holes. What do you guys typically put in these extra holes: errors, proof coins, or leave them empty? I was thinking I might fill them with the later Franklin Proofs as they seem to be pretty affordable and I don't care for empty holes in my albums  , but thought I would see what everyone else does. |

Coinman1014 has some extra holes at the end of his folders; he usually puts unusual things he has found that are the same size. For example, one of his extra dime slots has a nickel 3-cent piece in it.

Leave them empty. Errors would be cool though. WOLF

I hate the empty holes and they really bothered me, so I filled them with duplicates. In my Franklin half dollar album I have five duplicates filling those holes: 1949, 1950, 1952, 1953-S, and 1963-D. In my Eisenhower dollar album I have four duplicates filling those holes: 1971-D, 1972, 1976 (Variety I), and 1977-D. It is important to note that I later discovered that the 1972 "duplicate" was a Variety 1 reverse. The 1972 occupying the dated hole is a Variety 3. I did not know about the three 1972 varieties at the time and only later discovered them when I found CCF! |

I haven't done anything with any "extra" holes in any of my albums. Though I don't like them either ! ....  I may put dupes in the Franklin album like JB did......and the same with my Ike album. Maybe some fancy shiny silver Proofs in that Ike album ! YES ! I will plan on doing just THAT ! ...  I have a lot of "circulated" Ikes......but I view my albums as a "showpiece" of the best examples I can find/afford generally. And "folders" are for "circulation" examples. Of course, depending on actual "cost" of the particular coin or type, the two can & do overlap. Edited by eaglefoot

THe open holes don't bother me much, but I had thought about putting some errors or varieties to fill a few extra holes. I will probably label the holes and put in some errors or something as a subset. I just now purchased my first 2 Dansco albums and might venture into getting a 7070, so luckily the open holes don't bother me too much because that 7070 is gonna have some for a while.

I added the 1959-63 Franklin proofs to fill those holes

I usually fill the extra holes with proofs or duplicates. In my IKE album for example I included the 1990 W and 1990 P proof along with some IKE presidential medals.

I've got a 1943 Newfoundland cent in one of the extra holes in my Canadian small cent set. I wish there were enough extra holes for a whole set of Newfoundland small cents.

I know what you mean. My 7070 has 18 holes. The last time I added something to it was over two years ago; and the previous time was three years before that.

For Franklin halves simply continue with the continuation by dates with Kennedy halves. That's what I did. I've also made some odd types of Albums with similar continuations. For example a Liberty Head Dime/Mercury Head Dime/Roosevelt Dime Album. Naturally must leave out proofs and wierdo ones like the 42/41 Dime. Made one with Liberty Head Nickels/Buffalo Nickels/Jefferson Nickels too. Same thing though to leave out the proofs, errors, odd stuff too. Using Whitman blank covers and pages makes it fun. |
