In the last few years a new ebay insurance policy slipped by me. Used to be you could offer a buyer shipping insurance as an option. Now its against policy to off insurance.

This was very important in that it protects the seller from negligence by the Post Office or UPS. Often a buyer will claim they never received the item or an item is lost in the mail. Both can cause bad feedback and require a refund.

On the other hand if you hide the cost of insurance in the shipping cost it does not look competitive.

Any thoughts?

Yep.

The rule was long overdue. The seller is responsible for the item or its purchase price until it reaches the buyer safely. Period. End of story.

All the silly disclaimers that sellers try to pawn off on buyers are ridiculous, none of them override the Federal FTC mail order law, even if they are in bright red, bold, or a 24px font.

Why should the buyer pay to protect the seller?

I buy and sell on the Bay and do whatever it takes to protect myself. Before the change I never purchased optional insurance as a buyer and insisted they remove any charges for insurance included on an invoice for insurance. I reminded them that it was their responsibility to get it to me safely.

Agreed. It is the sellers responsibility to make sure the item arrives. Simply proving the item was shipped does nothing, because it may not have been received. If the seller can prove the item has been received, they are in the clear.

The item could be damaged due to poor packaging, which should not mean it's the buyer's fault for not wanting insurance. The item could have gotten lost due to going with the cheapest shipping option, which also should not mean it's the buyer's fault.

Whenever I ship anything out, on $50+ items, I always insure. When it's less than that, I still got delivery confirmation.

The buyer's responsibility is to pay, seller's responsibility to get it safely to the buyer.

I do always chuckle at the sellers who stress insurance is the buyer's choice... because it is not and PayPal/EBay will side with the buyer every time.

No. ebay will only protect the seller if seller can prove item was received, either through delivery, or signature confirmation.
