With all the hype regarding the 100th anniversary of the Canadian Navy and the commemorative coins being issued, I thought I'd share this municipal trade token that was issued by the city of Halifax, NS in 1980 to commemorate the 70th anniversary.
The tokens, often referred to as " Trade dollars" in Canada, are 33mm and were struck by the Sherritt Mint. They were issued in nickel in quantities of 30,000 and 250 in .999 silver. Nickel tokens weigh 14g and the silver 17g.
When these " Trade dollars" are issued by the communities (in this case Halifax) they are usually accepted by (and often sold by) participating members of the chamber of commerce until the date mentioned. One dollar is the most popular denomination, but there are plenty of others.
