Last week I went to a coin show in Raliegh NC and found a guy with some dateless Buffalo nickels for 15cents a piece. I went through about the 200 he had out for sale and picked out 3 mintmarked ones. Well I soaked them in vinegar and dates are starting to appear. Looks like I've got a 1915D, 1927D, and a 1917S. Not bad for 45cents, I'd say.  |

Everybody seems to be catching on to this. Pretty soon people won't have any left for their antique slot machines.  I'm surprised about the '27-D. I've done a lot of dateless, and I've never had one as late as a '27. |

For how long did you soak them in vinegar?

I got a question on the vinegar process also. Do you just put a drop of vinegar on the date or are you soaking the whole nickel?

I don't soak buffaloes, but my guess is that just the date and the mintmark area? At least that's what I would soak.

I have had them soaking for about a week now. It just depends on the coin, for instance the date started to show on the 15D in a couple days. The 17S is barely readable but is getting better and its been soaking for a week.
I put the whole coin in a cup of vinegar. I like vinegar better than nic-a-date because IMO it looks better and doesn't leave a black spot.

So was the $50 price for Morgans and Peace dollars before the 50% off? $25/each is about what dealers are buying them for around here right now. I would have scooped up a handful. |

Restored dates seem to go for 10-20% of G-4 market value.
