Trying to assess this coin's value. It's graded PCGS: Genuine 82. Filed Rims; The coin appears XF, but how much should be reasonably deducted from the trends/list price? I seem to be getting dramatically different answers from those I've spoken with. Thanks. (and after several unsuccessful attempts, it appears I've finally downsized & uploaded the image!). Pay 50-75% of the price of a similar coin without problem depending on how bad the filing is.

If you buy a coin with a problem you'll always have a coin with a problem.
On the other hand owning ANY sort of 1895 Morgan would be a bonus.
I'm glad I only collect business strikes.
That saves me LOTS of money.

It sounds as though it may be a rescued jewelry piece. I would want to see the coin before casting any judgment on value.

I've thought of cracking it out & resubmitting it; no guarantees I know of :)
Thinking maybe I should go down to one of the big shows where they have their graders on site, see what they say;
I also thought long & hard before making a deal for this coin, as it cost me some good coins + a good bit of cash; ultimately decided it wasn't a total problem coin as it's both a concentrated rim issue and a rare piece.
It was the first one I'd seen that fits an XF book that I could afford.

The surfaces lack originality, clear even in the small images; it'll come back a Details coin of one sort or another however you submit it. Probably best to let it stand. Your prospective customers - even as-is, the opening bid for a coin like this should be $20k - will be able to form their own opinions regarding it.

Appreciate it, SsuperDdave and the rest. I would say what I'm sure is a pretty common refrain - the pictures (in this case from PCGS) dont do the coin justice.
Their's are far too dark and flat, as the luster & eye appeal are actually quite beautiful on this coin (though that's certainly in the eye of the beholder).
As for the grading, I really think PCGS passed the buck here in not assigning a a more specific grade than Genuine, as the coin is VF-Borderline XF to everyone that's examined it.
In VF the coin lists at 31.5k (NGC), obviously not factoring in the rim dings.

You can try but typically they don't have the graders where you can talk to them (they're busy grading in another room somewhere) and also as a rule the TPG's don't give opinions at shows they just take submissions. If they DO give an opinion it isn't binding. |
