Hello to all,
I have recently inherited some nice coins, mostly silver US coins from before 1964, but my favorite is of course my only gold coin! 1891 Gold Double Eagle from the San Francisco Mint. I was hoping that you guys could help me with grading it. I am not interested in selling it, as this is a family heirloom. I would just like to know your opinions, as I am a "newby" in the numismatics arena! Thanks for your time!
-Mike

I'm in the AU53 to 55 range based on the pictures. There are some pronounced hairlines in front of Ms Liberty's noggin along with either copper spotting, or tarnish, on the reverse at the 8 o'clock position. There may be more stuff hidden in the flash reflections. Still, anyway you look at it it's neat to own.

Thank you for your input everybody! It is certainly fun to look at, yes. But she is being kept in a safe deposit box for the meantime! =)
Rest in Peace

I'm not convinced it has been cleaned. Usually not much to clean anyways on these, and hairlines are often obtained from circulation. The luster definitely puts it in the mid/upper AU range, but would need better pics to go higher.

It looks like it was wiped with something that scratched it.
That can be: shirt, towel, paper towel, etc.

You should never clean coins.
