2004 Florida Quarter? - Coin Community Forum

clary1265 Valued Member United States 168 Posts	Posted 02/14/2015 9:30 pm I have been searching through rolls of unc State Quarters and ran across these. I thought I had seen a post a while back but can't seem to find it now. I found five of them in one roll at different stages. The areas seem to be raised. The rest of the coin appears to be normal. I'm not able to post full coin pics yet, still waiting on the parts for my camera. What would have caused this? tweak800 Pillar of the Community United States 1249 Posts	Posted 02/15/2015 01:32 am Looks to me like a deteriorating die. Or slight movement as it was being pressed almost like Machine Doubling but instead of shelf like double it slid causing those marks. Report this Post to the Staff

coop Bedrock of the Community United States 62064 Posts	Posted 02/15/2015 09:00 am I agree with the over polished die theory. But that is die abrasion rather Die Deterioration. Deterioration is normal die wear on the overall design of the die. Die abrasion is localized/intentional removal of die design from over polishing. Usually you see this in the direction of the rim areas. This one was done to cover a clash/clashes not affecting the mid devices on the die in the center. We sometimes see this on Lincoln cents.
