I have a quarter with the I missing in "in God we trust" and theres a w there insted. Any ideas? I'm new to coin collecting

Can we get a closeup of the W in question? but it looks like the I was pushed toward the N by the fingers of a coin rolling machine.

I agree by the current photo it looks like a "W", but I also agree it looks like damage after it left the mint.

It appears to have heavy residue, what can I use to clean it?

PMD stands for post mint damage, meaning not good. Not a good idea to clean good coins, it reduces their value.

I don't think cleaning will help that coin much, it looks pitted.
