Obv: Carolus Monogram Legend: + CARLVS REX FR (Means: Charles, King of the Francs) Rev: : Monogram Legend:+ ET LANG AC PAT (ROM followed normally the line of text, but is missing on this coin!) (Means: And Longobards and first citizen of Rome) Diameter (mm): 22 Mass (gr): 1,23 Mint: Rome or Ravenna? Minted: AD 793/794-812 Ref: M.E.C. I, p. 644, 499 This coin has not been restored yet. This is how it was unearthed.
I just finished the cleaning process today. It came out really good. Better than I expected, to be honest. If we compare it with other known denari of this type, a couple of things stand out: The Charlemagne monogram is heavily simplified on this denarius. The reverse also has a divergent monogram. It's also in another position, compared with other ET LANG AC PAT denari.
The complete legend on this piece is: Side one: + CARLVS REX FR Side two: + ET LANG AC PA
