I have had a habit of finding varieties , putting them in flips and not attributing them . Every so often I'll grab some and have at it. I found this one years ago and thought I would look it up. Seems not to be listed . It definitely has some deterioration doubling going on but there are enough split serifs to convince me it's a DDO. Nether Wexler or VV has it listed. Interesting coin. Definitely has split serifs, but I'm not sure whether or not this could be caused by Die Deterioration. The coin doesn't look to be a late die state, so Die Deterioration this strong is pretty unexpected. I'm on the fence, leaning towards Die Deterioration, but I really don't know! |

I'm going off of the split serifs but I'm mostly a cent man. You will not find me commenting on many clad varieties.

Dr. Wiles was kind enough to look at the pics and determine this was deterioration doubling.

I agree that this is Die Deterioration Doubling. Notice how on some of the letters, the doubling appears on both sides. That's impossible in a doubled die. Error coin writer and researcher.

I'm sure Dr. Wiles and Mr. Mike Diamond are correct. With my limited knowledge, I would have agreed with you Stoneman, and Coop, because I know Doubled Dies can also have DDD. With an older coin that's not been previously discovered, it's hard to get a yay from anybody unless it's in an earlier die state. Here's a half dollar I found with the same story. I would also say it is DDD, but I see how you perceived a double die. I have also been fooled by these in the past. |

Initially I would have gone with MD, seeing how it is step like, but DDD also works as Mike stated. |
