BJ Neff Pillar of the Community United States 526 Posts	Posted 11/10/2008 07:59 am It is master die doubling. This happened much the same way that a working die becomes a doubled die. The master hub was offset during the second hubbing to the master die resulting in a doubled die. BJ Neff Report this Post to the Staff

If I had to take a stab at a number and Chuck may add to this. I would "guestimate" that 40% of all 1972 cents show this doubling. That's for P D and S coins. It is technically a doubled die but it has no value as it is almost as common as a normal 1972 cent. Thanks, Bill Report this Post to the Staff

coppercoins Pillar of the Community United States 7629 Posts	Posted 11/11/2008 9:50 pm Technically this IS a doubled die...and a true one. Only issue is that it was the MASTER die that was doubled - in the same way that working dies are doubled. The difference is when the master die is doubled, it creates dozens of working hubs, which each create dozens of working dies. End of the day you have over a hundred dies with the same doubling. Common, not worth a premium, but STILL genuine doubled dies. Report this Post to the Staff
