1795 Half Dime - Variety ? Help Please

I remember seeing a similar coin once with the same roughly V-shaped depression weakness at the eye and cheek of miss Liberty. I cannot find this reference now. Can anybody confirm (or not) this is a variety characteristic? of an 1795 Half Dime variety? Thanks! Report this Post to the Staff

CarrsCoins Pillar of the Community United States 756 Posts	Posted 10/13/2022 11:08 am lm-3. r-5. interestingly that makes it the 3rd most common die marriage for the year (out of 9 known). that spot isn't anything specific to the die marriage. I think that weakness is a strike issue. it looks like the shape of the eagles wing from the reverse. there were a lot of issues getting the early coins designs to strike up well. With the attribution I was able to find a further 3 examples of the 1795 Half Dime which show exactly the same feature at the eye and cheek as mine. I have not checked if they are the same variety. Whatever caused this "V-shaped" weakness at the eye and cheek, apparently went on during a number of strikes. Report this Post to the Staff
