There was a medium bounce after the strike that altered this post strike damage altering the date area. Very common examples from that machine:
1957-D-Wheat-Penny-DDO-Or-RPD-Or-Nothing-At-All?

This is a striking issue, not a doubled die issue. ( Machine Doubling is caused by the machine. A doubled die is caused by the doubling on the die, thus the term "Doubled Die."
