1939 Nickel With 1940 Reverse

I've been sorting through some early nickels and found what I think is a 1939 with a 1940 nickel reverse. I believe the lines at each end of the steps are/is one of the markers. Nice steps for a 1939. Thanks.

Another way of telling if the steps are too worn to tell is the S in PLURIBUS.
A 1940 has a serif at the top while a 1939 is plain.

Agree with JimmyD check the top of that S , my old eyes and the light on the coin I can't tell for sure.
