Please Help Me To Identify

I can't really help with the identification but I think I can help a little with the translation.

I think the medallion is Japanese but I only know the Chinese pronunciation of the characters.

The large character at the top is wei (�). The character is actually written slightly differently but Japanese kanji are not always written the same as the Chinese characters.

Wei means "danger" or "peril".

The large character at the bottom is hu (è­·) which means "to protect".

The two characters together thus have the meaning of "to protect from danger".

The small character to the right is ri (æ- ¥) which means "sun" or "day". The small character on the left is guang (å.‰) which means "light".

Together, these two characters mean "sunlight".

However, ri (æ- ¥) is also the first character in the word for "Japan" (æ- ¥æœ¬) so it's possible that the ri (æ- ¥) might be an abbreviation for "Japan" and the guang (å.‰) or "light" could also be an abbreviation for a government office, company, etc.
