Greetings again folks. I just posted about 2 lincoln pennies which I recently discovered. Well, I also recently discovered this Jefferson nickel as well.
Does anybody have an idea what might be the issue with this coin? Both the obverse and reverse appear to be affected and I do not believe that this was manipulated.
Your nickel has been Struck Through Grease which typically appears as isolated areas of weakness. It is a fairly common occurrence but yours has progressed to a point where the dies are partially clogged so it is a little bit more interesting. Grease along with metal dust and other "press gunk" can spread into the recesses of the die where it will prevent those areas from being struck up on the resulting coin.
That is one of the draw backs of taking picture through a flip. It does not make a clear picture of the entire coin. All pictures should be taken with the coin out of the flip or encapsulation if possible.
