Hi guys I've started my interest in coins with the Australian Crowns - basically because they are big f..k off coins, look great, aren't super exe, but aren't super cheap (generalising), & are relatively liquid. Below is an eg from The Unicorn's favourite bloke Peter Wallace (coin pic at end of post): http://pages.ebay.com/link/?nav=ite...0245&alt=webWho it's from doesn't matter for my qn - & it's this - if we assume this is in fact an aUnc coin how much do the savage marks across the king's face devalue it? I know a mark here or there is almost expected with these coins - but I personally am put off by these marks (ie. it's worth stuff all to me as a buyer - I'd take a less marked Vf say). What about the general market though - what do you folks reckon about a coin like this? Cheers, Andy. Edited by andycoinster 10/06/2014 09:51 am

For 1938 you can get a aUnc (AU55) coin for a similar price and without the battered cheek. That is also a coin without the big? over the originality of the surfaces (an undipped coin or not) of the Wallace coins. I would guess that this '38 should drop over $100 on that level of battery as it would either drop in grade because of it or may suffer from details grade or possibly no grade (bodybag). An AU (details) PCGS '38 sold under $60 a few months ago, that is an indication of how harsh the discount can be.

what a shame ! there are oodles of unimpaired, near-Unc Aussie Crowns out there. Why would a serious collector waste time on this ? Personally, I wouldn't pay more than melt for this.

Thanks nealef. I guess that was the main part of my qn - do marks from minting/bagging like this detract from grade or value or both - & seems the answer is both. Thanks heaps for your comprehensive answer, helps a new collector like me a lot.
Peter, yeah I didn't buy it & I don't think many collectors would? I wouldn't want a coin this damaged in my collection - although if it was a 1930 Penny I found in granny's old change I wouldn't complain :)
I'm feeling a vibe here that heritage aside this coin may be optimistically graded.

Guys one other qn - re grading bodies, which ones can I trust - or maybe a better way to put it is how, in yr opinions might you rank them from best to worst (eg. PCGS, NGC, others)? Also are the fakesters working in this area or are these nearly foolproof with the holograms etc? Cheers Andy.

sorry, I missed that part of the O.P. - "do marks from minting/bagging like this detract from grade ..."
At various times, between being minted, and leaving the mint, coins were stored in bags. The coins tumbled from the press into a funnel, then into a bag, where they tumbled onto one another. And when the rim of a falling coin struck the face a coin below - BINGO ... bagmark !
traditionally, in our Australian system, "bagmarks", do not deprive a coin of status as Uncirculated, because a coin can acquire bagmarks without being circulated.
Of course, within the grade "Unc", we have "Gem", "Choice", stc, and bagmarks will adversely affect a coin within those sub-grades.

Yea that would be a melt coin for me, even over here in the states. You can find a much nicer example for the same price. Welcome to the world of crowns. They are very addicting. Before you know it youll be venturing off to other countries. Some other countries crowns you might want to check out and can be had at a very reasonable price would be panama, Peru and the phillipines.

That's mind-boggling $250+ being asked for a melt coin! I know it's only Aussie dollars :) - but wow! Yeah kcaco - it is addicting - & I've just dabbled in my 1st overseas crown by getting an English 1937 Crown (just a cheapy to ease me in) - pretty similar to the Aus design on the obverse, reverse diff, obviously diff silver content etc. Great to know there are others - I'm going to check them out - thanks for the tipoff
