Primarily a general idea because there are so many errors and varieties so I just learn how to spot the diagnostics of the major types. About half or a little more of the time I happen on a type like this nickel without the seller really knowing what they have. Sometimes I run across a coin dealer who happens to know exactly what they have, and sometimes I buy from them a type/error outright because I am looking for something.  |
