Split Grading - An Idea That Would Drive Collectors Mad

Why don't the grading services offer "split grading?" A grade for the obverse, and a grade for the reverse? So many times I've seen coins with a wonderful reverse, but an obverse that was lacking, and dragged the overall grade down. This would be a bonanza for the grading services as slabbed coins would need to be resubmitted to meet the new standard. Yes, I can hear the moaning and groaning, as well as the gnashing of teeth at the mere suggestion, but I think it would eventually be embraced. Then after a reasonable period would undoubtedly come, "edge grading!" Now someone will respond with the name of some little known grading service from the murky past yhat tried this, and failed to catch on... * Edited by Staff to clarify the topic title. I don't recall the details but I seem to remember it was a Canadian TPG that used flexible plastic 'holders' and noted grades for both sides of the coin. Someone will chime in to clarify the specifics of what I am saying above. IMO the service if offered today would not be very popular. mrwhatisit Pillar of the Community United States 2998 Posts	Posted Today 3H 18M ago Interesting One idea is to put the split grades somewhere on the grading tab but have the overall grade of the numismatic item still in the center. Like: AG-3 reverse, G-6 obverse, But the net grade would be a G-4... Just a thought Report this Post to the Staff
