I started out thinking that I could make some cash by collecting coins but after spending time on this forum I am starting to realize that I should be happy if I break even. I have started buying higher grade coins, mostly slabbed Morgans and ASE's. I have learned to enjoy the hobby and buy what I like. I have sold some mint sets but took the money and bought a CC Morgan dollar. I consider myself a collector, with just a hint of capitalist thrown in. |

Both. The first rule regarding buying anything you expect to make a profit on including coins is never buy anything you are not willing to be stuck with. Therefore when I buy inventory for resale I am buying for my collection as well. My hope is that it does not become a part of my collection but instead is sold at a profit. This cannot always be the case. In about 40 more years I will probably go through my entire hoard (what did not sell during that time frame), cherry pick the finest of each coin I have to make a set of that series and auction off the rest and give money to the kids and any grandkids. Until then I am buying for resale and enjoying owning my "collection" until someone pays me for it.  Sincerely, John Leckrone |

I collected coins when I was a kid (and still have that collection), but then got away from it for decades. Recently, I began acquiring silver bullion (and a little gold). This led me to the bullion coins, some of which have numismatic interest. I view the numismatic interest in/value of a coin as a hedge against fluctuations in its bullion value. My interest in collecting has been rekindled and I'm not sure how much it may spread beyond the emphasis on bullion. I'm mostly a capitalist, but still, if I love a coin it is hard for me to part with it.

a collector for sure. I don't think I have ever sold a coin and I'm not a 'value' collector anyway so even my duplicates are given away to someone who would want to start a collection of common,circulated, world coins.

I am both a CAPITALIST and a collector. I'll sell my U.S. anytime but not my Mexican. Viva Mexican numismatics and the Mexican Coin Club!
