This may be a dumb question, but does the wording on the edge normally read up when the obverse is up? Or can it go either way? My wife came home with a couple of these recently. The Millard Fillmore (2010P) reads up when the reverse is up but the Franklin Pierce (2010D) reads up when the obverse is up. Report this Post to the Staff

Double Indemnity New Member United States 24 Posts	Posted 12/31/2010 11:59 am If you find a dollar coin that has circulated to any extent, you'll notice it gets hard to read the edge lettering. Little knicks and dents can sometimes obscure the mint mark. Report this Post to the Staff

And as mentioned since the coins are struck and then go into the edge lettering machine in random orientation if you check a large sample of dollar you will find that the split between A and B is roughly 50/50. So some reason people have gotten worked up over the Position A/B thing on the new dollars but no one ever cared about it on the early Half Cents, large cents, half dollars or early dollars which all come with the same "Position A/B" phenomenon. I found this from about 6 months ago. Condor101 reported this but it was actually on Sacagawea dollars. The issue of the edge lettering goes back and forth so much, its hard to keep track.
