How To Decide To Replace A Nickel In Your Coin Album

cmajlz Valued Member United States 123 Posts	Posted 01/17/2012 8:00 pm My granddaughter and I have started placing the coins in an album. My question is, when you open a roll of coins and think you want to replace a coin all ready in your album what do you do? Remove the coin from the album to compare? I have removed the same denomination maybe 10 times so far and know we will find a better coin at some point. Is there a better way? I figure constantly handling the coins is not the best idea nor is it good for the album. Is there a solution? Report this Post to the Staff

I would suggest choosing a certain grade (say Extremely Fine for nickel roll finds) and not put them into the album until you find a specimen of that grade. You can set aside lower-grade dates, but don't put them in the album until you are absolutely happy with the coin. That being said, a little upgrading shouldn't hurt too much. Yes, you definitely want to minimize the insertion/removal cycle for each hole in your album. The album can wear out. Personally, I do not do upgrades (once a coin goes into my album it stays there). When pulling coins from circulation, I am mindful about the chances of finding something better. Once I am happy with the coin, in the album it goes and it the album it stays. cladking Pillar of the Community United States 2278 Posts	Posted 01/18/2012 5:33 pm My rule of thumb for replacing a coin is always "clearly superior". On moderns I tend to weight strike quality very highly so a "contender" has to be well made by good dies to start with. Then it has to have less wear or fewer marks. In other words if it isn't definitely a superior example I don't pull the other coin out of the album to compare. Sometimes I do put the original coin back in though. Time don't fly, it bounds and leaps. Report this Post to the Staff

I haven't learned how to grade coins yet but found a 1938 that looks to me like a MS grade. Still don't have a camera yet so can't post a picture. Not only do I not have a digital camera I don't own a cell phone either. My land line phone does not have caller ID (but is cordless), my newest car is a 2005 van, my computer is 2 years old, I don't have a HD tv but I do have running water and elelctricity - can you tell what generation I belong to?
