I've always liked Washington on a $20....these Fr.1187's are no exception.
Beautiful notes guys. How does the note grade @Jimjumper?

I just took a close look and while the top margin is there it is real tight. Despite the color and the nice face it does have 3 folds so its, at best , a VF albeit a nice one. paid $250 for it and think I got a bargain.

To clarify: "Three folds" does not translate to VF. Three or four heavy folds will limit a grade to XF as a rule, while three light creases or bends might be acceptable even for low AU. This note appears better than VF and the price paid seems a bargain indeed.

Thought I would post pics of both the front and the back. I resized the face so the margins can be seen. I had this note looked at by a couple of dealers who agreed that it would grade about VF35 but it could be their judgement was colored by an offer to purchase it. :)   |

You mean that dealers would deliberately try to buy your note as a VF, but then turn around and try to sell it as an XF or AU?
So much for an honest opinion!

Jim - Margins look much better! Circulated paper money is very difficult to grade from pictures. All I can say is, based on what you've said and the overall appearance of the note, I think it is much more likely XF than VF.
Would you show us a reverse pic please. When you say 3 folds, then you do not see a fourth horizontal fold?

tech - Nice pickups. That Tate/Mellon sig combo on the $20 was last used in early 1929!

Whatever the grade, I am going to keep it. I can't afford the big dollar notes so when I get a chance at one that is nice for the grade I"ll grab it. I already have a $10 1922 GC to go with this and am shopping for a $50 but I'll probably have to settle for a Fine for that note.

My latest, a $50 Bank of Commerce of Seattle type I. It certainly has it's share of problems, but I like it. Interestingly the only notes Kelly shows for that charter are either $100 or $50 denominations for both large and small notes. The are at least 36 more type I 50.00 bills besides mine. I think I will concentrate on Washington state nationals and depression scrip for awhile, at least until some other bug bites me.  |
