I got these in today. Not the best of shape, but I like them. The vignette on the 20 was used in the civil war I think - I'll have some research to do on that.

I mostly collect Canadian coins (bills are rather expensive for me to keep) but I got this in my change last Sunday, back side up. I was hoping to get a red seal because it looks different, but the date was pretty amazing already. This is my first US bill that's older than 1995 (the 1995 was a really limp $1 that I spent). I had to "hunt" for 1986 series bills in Canada so finding this in circulation kinda surprised me. I guess it's because all your paper money is green? And it doesn't look half bad to boot. Aside from the beat up corners and creases, the only major fold is down the centre. It's quite dirty though. Is this a keeper? It's $20 so it's quite a fair bit of cash.

I'd say not a keeper if you don't want to tie up the cash. It's got the standard wallet crease down the middle, other wrinkles and folds, and as you mentioned, it's very dirty.
However, if you can hang onto it until you get an upgrade, why not? Especially if/since they're hard to come by in Canada.
However chances are someone here on this forum has a nice one that they'd do a trade for. 20 for 20.... sounds like something y'all do up there. The one I have is in about the same shape as yours, otherwise I'd do it!

I'll hang on to it until I can get an upgrade, but if I'm skint I know which bill to grab out of my collection. I haven't seen American bills circulating as Canadian bills here, only coins, I guess the people think it's better to go to the currency exchange!
I got this when I was in New York. I paid for my ticket to the American Museum of Natural History with a $50 bill and this was in the change. And then a wheatie from the souvenir shop. And then a red '81 cent picked up from the ground in Bleeker Street. Asked a friend to hold it for me since he had deep pockets, and then he got a wheatie. Then a friend who doesn't like carrying coins gave me his handful for $2 and it totals to $2.60 when I counted, and there's also a wheatie in there. Crazy good luck streak day! ...And I got sidetracked.
I don't think I'll be doing trades too soon though. I haven't sent anything by mail, and I don't think sending money across the border what I should do for a first mailing. I'll just ask around people I know if they have anything interesting.
I split a $20 into $5s yesterday, I got a 1986 New York bill, but it's your stereotypical "smelly money".
Edit: By "smelly money" I mean it's a bill that's so beat up it's totally limp and it also smells funny. Sorry if I offended anyone with the term. One reason why a direct translation from what is usually said in another language is sometimes not the best idea in the world.

LCS purchases this morning. First of is a common 1923 $1 Silver Certif. Have tons of these and still love buying them. Got it for $7. Next is a CU 1934 Federal Reserve Note. Hopefully will be back for more of them because all the ones he has are consecutive. Got this one for $35. Last is probably my best deal of the day. Got this, albeit rough, 1914 Fed. Reserve Note for only $60. Passed it up initially, but on my way home it was nagging me so I had to turn around and get it. No pinholes, tears, and only a couple heavy vertical folds. Not sure why I passed it up to begin with. Ten dollars over face for this note is an absolute steal in my opinion.
