Setting here looking at ebay and stacking junk silver quarter and found, wow. It takes 22 worn SLQs to make 20 Washington quarters. Guess you guys knew it, but it was a huge surprise to me. Jim
The washingtons were a bit higher relief than the SLQ's ,,I believe though that since 1873 the planchets would have started life Identical in size and weight.
every coins life is different,, but the overall design of the SLQ's was less likely to handle the circulation as well as the Washingtons ,, small narrow design details , the date was upset on a pedistal for the earlier coins and was eventually recessed to help keep it from wearing off so quick ,full fields with much of the design slightly raised from the lower fields the coin just did not wear well.
washingtons on the other hand had the large central bust ,relatively design free fields,high rims with the date set in a protected area between rim and bust ,, they were just made to wear longer,, I guess even the mint learns some things sometimes.
