Thats not my point, besides, no one can correctly identify inflation, deflation, stagflation, etc. But anyways, whatever, I could care less and you are right, none of this answers your question.

Buying and investing in physical silver is a waste of time and money at this point. If you want the best bang for your buck and avoid the heartache of watching your investment in silver go lower or do nothing for an extended period of time, consider buying SLV. At least you can get out of that in a jiffy.

They're not inflation harbors. Oil is one of the best investments especially back then on the verge of it exploding in usage. It's in everything we'd be back to the 1400s without it. Due beers another giant of their industry that inside information would have let him know it was coming. People like diamonds and the mines are cheap to run just another solid investment.

Inflationary actions would be changing out your currency to one that won't be affected things of that nature. He may have been worried about it we don't know, but his stocks were nothing more than good investments overall.

As for what to buy now I say stick to things with numismatic value it'll protect the value if spot falls. Things like Morgan rollers are highly popular and hold value better than bullion

My question was how much mark-up over spots should I expect to pay for 90% Silver coinage (specially Liberty Walking half dollars)? Or, is there a better way own physical Silver?

I've been satisfied paying spot to spot + 2% when buying ungraded 90% junk silver from my LCS. That said, I never buy cull or otherwise badly worn or damaged coins, either. As for selling? No idea. These days I only buy what I plan to keep.

You lucky son of a guns that find junk silver near spot...If I pay 10% over, it's a good deal...my LCS has no problem moving it at that price, and never sits on 90%.

OK, that gives me a range for Junk Silver 2-10%. Most of the dealers at the Coin Shows I go to try to hold out for 20%+ over spot ... so I've been more selective in what I buy. A lot of dealer are not selling coins just for silver value (at, or slightly over spot). I think they either get rid of 90% Silver quickly or they are putting it away.

Last show I picked up (20) MS 1964 Kennedy half dollars for $185 (20% over spot) and all were MS no sliders. Then another (20) Liberty Walking halves for $200 (30% over spot). Most were better dates or grades. (2)1917 VG, 1917-S Rev Good, 1920 VG, (2)1927-S VG, 1929-D VG+, 1933-S Fine, 1936-S XF, 1937 Fine, 1937-S XF, 1939-S XF, 1942 AU, 1942-S XF, 1943 XF+, 1943 XF, 1943 AU, 1944 XF, 1944-S XF, 1945 XF. Is 30% over spot ($10 each) too much for these?

Thanks for the link yup7676.

10 for a decent looking walker seems to be pretty normal. The vast majority of walkers being sold for about melt will be completely warn away and probably a common date too

Around here the buy price for Morgans and Peace dollars is $10 to $18. We pay $18, but ALL the dealers are getting sellers. All the dealers are selling for around $25 for Circ Morgan and Peace dollars ( though the Common MS Peace dollars are being sold at the price as well). Halves, on the other hand are being bought for about $4 to $5. We pay a premium for better dates/condition coins. Other dealers don't (usually the "Cash for Gold' places). Sell prices are anywhere from $8 to $11. There is a HUGE mark up on Halves. Not so much for dimes and Quarters. Dimes especially are a better buy. We make 40 cents on each dime. But in terms of spot value, our dime prices are a bit less than 5% over spot.

Think of it this way. If you buy 1k worth of Halves you are getting 100 halves with a face value of $50. Perhaps you might get 110 halves with a face value of $55.

Now if you buy 1K worth of Dimes ( at $1.75 each) you are going to get about 570 dimes with a face value of $57. If you get a 5 to 10 percent volume discount; you might get as much as $62.50 in face.

Some dealers will just give you a set price for 'X' amount of face value; knowing they would lose money if they extended their selling prices for bulk bids. It is all in how you approach a deal from the beginning. If you ask how much dimes, quarters, halves, ect are; then tell them you will buy (insert whatever number comes up to your allotment); and ask if they will give a discount. At this point most will just sell for the agreed on price. Some will squirm and say they only deal, in larger quantities, in 'face value bags', which are actually higher priced. Shop around. but know the buying price and selling prices.

I think you are correct. My experience is the following order of preference for physical silver coinage (observed during the last 2008-2011 run-up).

1.)90 % Silver Half Dollars (Liking Walkers).
2.)90 % Silver Dollars (Liking Morgans).
3.)90 % Silver Quarters.
4.)90 % Silver Dimes (Liking Mercury).
5.)40% Silver Kennedy halves.
6.)35% Silver War Nickels.

I think War Nickels can be a good play. In the past when Silver was flat I was able to buy them in auction situations well under spot, and then sell them later during run-ups at spot plus. However, in auctions you always have that buyer's fee.

I disagree. War Nickels are not that desirable to stackers due to their low silver content and the difficulty storing them in large quantities. It is harder to refine them and I've heard of sellers paying well under spot for them when buying. A local reputable dealer in my area was paying $0.40 each for them a few weeks ago.

Dealers typically sell junk silver in my area for spot + 10 percent.

Joe, I think you mean we agree not disagree. I have War Nickels listed last on my preference/desirability list. So, we agree that the 35% Silver War Nickel are less desired by the Silver "stackers".

Because of this fact, War Nickel can then be selectively purchase well below spot (as you pointed out), especially in down or sideways Silver markets like we have now. However, I've found that rolls of War Nickel can easily be sold on ebay at spot+ in run-up markets as we had in early 2011 (when everyone wants Silver).

We're buying "value Silver" with War Nickels.

War Nickels are also probably the only silver you can fairly consistently find in bank rolls since most people dont bother to look for them

really ugly price action in gold and silver. Completely lost the Friday bounce, gains being wiped away quickly thus far this AM.

Not what you want to see if you thought the worst was over for gold and silver.
