We all know that nobody uses 50-cent coins anymore. I've never seen a worn nickel one. So I'm going to do an experiment: artificially circulating a currently nice-looking 1975 50-cent (right now I'd give it a AU-55?) by carrying it in a pocketful of change from day to day. The experiment begins Monday and I hope to post weekly updates. Let's see how low I can get it

It`s going to take years to get it down to even a VF30 or so. Cool experiment through.

You might have better luck fishing through the tubs at a coin shop... chances are, it is not from real circulation, but a pocket coin. It has taken me years to find lowball nickel dollars...

Get yourself one of those gem stone tumblers and put a couple of handfuls of coins in it.

awesome experiment As for the time scale, if you are relatively active, and carry enough change with you, it might only take a year or two. However, I would guesstimate that it would take considerably longer.

Ten minutes in a lapidarist's stone tumbler will knock any coin about.

I've got a rock tumbler, so maybe I could try that. Even if it's cheating. (Artificial toning, artificial wearing... what's next?)
